The invention of the WWW by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 was probably the greatest technologial creation of all time. It opened the floodgates for the dissemination of information around the world.

The first Web search engine was Wandex, a web crawler developed by Matthew Gray at MIT in 1993. Another, Aliweb, also appeared in 1993, and still runs today. The first full text crawler-based search engine was WebCrawler, which came out in 1994. This idea let users search for any word in any web page, which became the norm for all major search engines since. Then came Google which has revolutionised the the way that the internet is searched.

I am fascinated by the genius folk at Google who, quite rightly, spend a great deal of time defeating what they call "optimizers", in order that the search results are what the visitor wants.

I try my best to follow their rules and guidelines meticulously, as this is a long term project, and am not looking for a quick fix.

The UK has become the first major economy where advertisers spend more on internet advertising than on television advertising, with a record £1.75bn online spend in the first six months of the year.

The milestone marks a watershed for the embattled TV industry, the leading ad medium in the UK for almost half a century. It has taken the internet little more than a decade to become the biggest advertising sector in the UK.

The internet has become a ongoing emerging source that tends to expand more and more. The growth of this particular media attracts the attention of advertisers as a more productive source to bring in consumers. Internet marketing, also known as digital marketing, web marketing, online marketing, search marketing or e-marketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet. Niche and hyper-niche internet marketing put further emphasis on creating destinations for web users and consumers on specific topics and products. Online advertising is a form of promotion that uses the Internet and World Wide Web for the expressed purpose of delivering marketing messages to attract customers. Examples of online advertising include contextual ads on search engine results pages, banner ads, Rich Media Ads, Social network advertising, interstitial ads, online classified advertising, advertising networks and e-mail marketing.

As the trade body to the online industry, the IBA works with its members to lead the market with standards and guidelines to improve business practices.

Behavioural targeting is a form of online marketing that uses advertising technology to target web users based on their previous behaviour. Advertising creative and content can be tailored to be of more relevance to a particular user by capturing their previous decision making behaviour and looking for patterns.
