It opened the floodgates for the dissemination of information around the world. The first Web search engine was Wandex, a web crawler developed by Matthew Gray at MIT in 1993. Another, Aliweb, also appeared in 1993, and still runs today. The first full text crawler-based search engine was WebCrawler, which came out in 1994. This idea let users search for any word in any web page, which became the norm for all major search engines since. Then came Google which has revolutionsed the the way that the internet is searched. We are a small group of internet enthusiasts, who have developed a number of websites for ourselves and for friends. We are fascinated by the genius folk at Google who, quite rightly, spend a great deal of time defeating what they call "optimizers", in order that the search results are what the visitor wants. We try our best to follow their rules and guidelines meticulously, as we are a long term project, and are not looking for a quick fix.
