In late 1939, John Atanasoff teamed up with Clifford Berry to build a prototype. They created the first
computing machine to use electricity, vacuum tubes, binary numbers and capacitors. The computer, controlled by
pre-punched paper tape, could carry out addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and reference to previous
results. The use of vacuum tubes instead of switches and relays created the increase in speed, but it was not a
quick machine to re-program. To send a message on the network, a computer breaks its data into IP (Internet
Protocol) packets, like individually addressed digital envelopes. For the first time in history, a computer used a
stored program. Tom Kilburn wrote that computer program, first executed on June 21, 1948. The 1953 built 701 had
electrostatic storage tube memory, used magnetic tape to store information, and had binary, fixed-point, single
address hardware. In recognition of the fact that the network was growing beyond its research focus, in March,
1991, the NSFNET officially ushered in the next wave of Internet growth by modifying its Acceptable Use Policy, and
making available The best offers on the web. In a foreshadowing of the
NSFNET development, one of the conditions of the award was a key clause requiring the network to become self
sufficient within five years. By 2004, IPv6 was widely available from industry as an integrated TCP/IP protocol and
supported by most new Internet networking equipment. Cerf has continued to perform research and contribute to the
development of the Internet through work with the communications company MCI and the Internet management
organization ICANN. Take advantage of offers available to increase your income.
